First dates can be exciting and nerve-racking at the same time. Most of your first encounter will be conversation, however, so put your effort on your conversation skills when planning for this date. There are plenty of things to talk about, but the following is a list of nine topics of conversation that you should avoid.
1. The Other Person’s Ex Girlfriend, Boyfriend, Husband or Wife
If your date happens to bring up their ex or exes, try to change the subject. And of course, you should never bring up the other person’s ex or exes in the first place.
2. Your Ex
You don’t want to talk about the other person’s exes, and you shouldn’t be talking about your own exes either. Don’t bring them up, and try to avoid answering any questions that your date may ask about past relationships.
3. Your Finances
Whether or not you have a large or small amount of money should not come up on a first date. Finances are an important topic to discuss with a long-term romantic partner, but you two are just dating right now, so leave this topic alone.
4. The Future You May Have Together
You two aren’t an item yet. You’re not dating, so try not to act like you are. Avoid talking in the collective “we,” and don’t even hint at the possibility that you may end up together.
Another issue that should not be brought up on a first date is sex or sexual preferences. This is just a getting to know you outing, so keep things PG.
6. How Awful You Are
Self-deprecation is a fine attribute when it’s used in moderation. You certainly don’t want to be too haughty about your amazing self and all of your wonderful accomplishments, but don’t downplay yourself too much either.
7. How You Want Children Some Day
Just as he don’t want to speak in the collective “we” as if you two are already dating, you shouldn’t talk about your preferences for your future either. Try to keep things in the present. Most importantly, don’t mention whether you do or don’t want children someday.
8. Deeply Personal Issues
If you have had a troubling familial history, a history of depression or another mental issue, physical issues or any other personal problems, this is fine. But these aren’t topics of discussion for a first date.
Lastly, it’s normal to talk about yourself at least a little on a first date, but don’t get too carried away. The goal should be to learn about the person you’re on a date with, so focus on asking them questions instead of going on long rants about yourself.Tags: featured
